Ohio Wesleyan University is a selective, private, undergraduate liberal arts, residential institution founded in 1842 and located just 20 miles north of Columbus, is seeking candidates for the position of Visiting Assistant Professor of Biological Sciences.

Job Summary:

The Department of Biological Sciences is seeking a Visiting Assistant Professor with a deep background in cell and molecular biology and a strong commitment to teaching and mentoring undergraduate students from a variety of backgrounds. Teaching responsibilities for this position include introductory and advanced courses in cell and molecular biology and may include courses in microbiology, genetics, and immunology depending on the specific background and training of the candidate. Applicants should hold a Ph.D. in Cell/Molecular Biology or a related field and provide evidence of a commitment to undergraduate teaching and mentoring.

Responsibilities and duties

  • Design, develop, and deliver classroom experiences in introductory-level cell biology, upper-level cell & molecular biology, and another area based on experience and department need;
  • Take primary responsibility for preparing and delivering lab experiences in upper-level cell biology;
  • Deliver introductory lab experience with the assistance of lab support personnel;
  • Provide opportunities for mentored undergraduate research experiences;
  • Engage effectively with students inside and outside the classroom, including a high level of availability and accessibility.
  • Work proactively to identify students having trouble and help them achieve success.

Factors contributing success:   

  • Ph.D. in Cell or Molecular Biology or a related discipline;
  • Evidence of preparation for a teaching-intensive career at the undergraduate level, including experiences teaching classes and laboratories in the relevant topics and mentoring undergraduate students in research experiences;
  • Commitment to teaching and mentoring undergraduate students;
  • Experience working with people from diverse backgrounds and a commitment to helping students from diverse racial, social, and cultural groups attain their full potential;
  • Commitment to departmental and institutional service;
  • Commitment to the liberal arts.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience as the Instructor of Record for an undergraduate biology course
