The first class of the Ohio Five - OSU Summer Undergraduate Research Experience in Chemistry and Biochemistry presented the results of their their ten-week research posts at The Ohio State University at a capstone celebration attended by OSU and Ohio Five faculty and deans on July 25. Working alongside OSU faculty, the students completed research assignments that contributed to the projects and priorities of the lab while gaining an experience of graduate school working with OSU undergraduate, post-doctoral and graduate researchers.
A collaboration between The Ohio State University and the Five Colleges of Ohio, the inaugural SURE program sponsored 10 paid summer research internships in chemistry or biochemistry from May 21 to July 28, 2018, for the students at The College of Wooster, Denison University, Kenyon College, Oberlin College and Ohio Wesleyan University. Students were enthusiastic about their summer program. One commented in a post-program evaluation, "The most valuable part of this experience was having the opportunity to work on an intensive research project for 10 weeks in an R-1 university lab with all of the resources that Ohio State has, that I would never be able to experience at my own small university. I enjoyed working with a mentor and being part of a lab group/team. Additionally, the presentations throughout the program and the capstone gave me an opportunity to improve my public speaking skills as well as speak coherently about an advanced science topic."
Participating in this summer's program were Shane Canfield (Kenyon '20), Wexin Chen (Denison '20), Yukun Jin (Wooster '19), Kevin Miller (Wooster '20), He Ren (Oberlin '20), Victoria Suave (Denison '21), Madeline Sorrick (Ohio Wesleyan '19), Payton Weltge (Denison '20) and Cassandra Williams (Denison '20.) Plans are underway for a return of the program in summer 2019.
